Oil and water – a recipe for disaster, or evolution?

economy, environment, evolution, health

Getting upset about things of the world don’t too often get deep under my skin, but the latest disaster that threatens to take away even more of our pristine areas just feels like a kick in the gut. I actually had to avoid reading as much as I usually do on the event, since visions of helpless animals covered in oil and honest-working families suffering potential economic tragedies just flooded my mind with negative thoughts. Instead of wallowing in the misery, I thought how this event could cause all of us to pause and think about where we are in our evolution.

We are now at the stage of our humanity where we can create really amazing technologies while reducing our imprint on this planet with outdated technologies that cannot be sustainable with the amount of people that live in the world. The mass bulk of people of the world would  want to have the American / Western civilization lifestyle. To avoid a the creation of a black hole here on earth, we can make a few changes.

I’m talking:

  • Cars with piston engines that can be powered with compressed air
  • Solar-powered technology
  • Wind power
  • Tide power (no, not the detergent)
  • Educating about pollution and litter control
  • Green chemistry for pharmaceutical production
  • … just for starters …

Yes, battery hybrid cars are a step in the right direction, but how long until we see a disaster from the battery production and disposal when all cars on the road are running on Duracells? If we are to think that we can envision wonderful vacations with pure sandy beaches, warm ocean waters to swim in, landscapes of modern cities without pollution, while at the same time having more fossil fuel cars, more plastic, and more Fritos chip bags, then we are trying to realize a pipe dream.

It all starts with a change of the mind… with imagination. John Lennon got the tune right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okd3hLlvvLw

Imagine, imagine, imagine. Each physical item began by manifesting an image, a thought.

Okay, I’ll start. Imagine a place where people are given a base salary to keep the planet free of litter and making purchasing decisions that improved the habitat. Imagine that companies started building products and trying to reach a zero habitat impact throughout the whole production of products and services. Imagine that people stop idolizing raunchy (and sometimes funny) TV shows that are setting examples for how our children are behaving (and even some grown-ups). Imagine that poverty and wars only exist in history books.

If you’re telling me that you don’t believe that any of this can happen, I would say that you need to start imagining. We are Homo Sapiens. We won the race and are now the most dominant species. Game over. Now, let’s try a new game. The rules are pretty simple. We see the destruction of the habitat as the great enemy without a face, and we start combating this enemy with green arms. Those are the same kinds of arms that hug people and pick up messes. The market is obliged to follow and furnish us with the tools and products to fulfill our desires, as soon as we make our voice clear. Center your mind on good thoughts, then let your voice speak them.

Oh, I just saw you on a white sandy beach at a reservoir with a refreshing drink of your choice in a cup that you can eat. You look great! Enjoy your day.

AVATAR in 3D – Nature vs. Guns

After so many recommendations to see this movie, I decided to spend a warm and sunny winter afternoon inside a theater with my wife. We saw Avatar in 3D, complete with nerd glasses. I think my wife looked better in them than I.

Avatar is a wonderfully imaginative tale that made me wonder if the blue humanoids on the screen are real, or created in a computer lab. Add the three-dimensional effect and the blur becomes even more distinct. The topography of the world of Pandora, complete with floating mountains and luminescent creatures piqued my senses and drew emotions out of me that I hadn’t felt in a very long time. The Featurette gives a sensational glimpse of this fantastic world (link to featurette at bottom of this blog post):

The repeated references to the connection of living beings to their home world gave me hope that those in the theater would be immersed in natural spirit and somehow be brought to a new sense of awareness through multimedia osmosis. At times I allowed my senses to connect to the world of Pandora, as I have many times connected with the energy of our wonderful creation, Mother Earth, and her creator. It’s a lovely feeling when I can draw on the cycle of life between predator and prey, birth and death, all the while enjoying the fullness of life. If I could have my wish, I would like to see a version of this movie that only focused on the connection-building scenes that help one appreciate her/his animal body and to relink thought to remember that our bodily vessels are made up of earthbound substances. It seems like in this age we are bombarded with images that seem to separate us from the natural world. In this train of thought lives the irresponsible consumerism that destroys our world at such a rapid pace. It is an important message for us to give reverence to our habitat. Though we may be able to create a new and wonderful world free of mosquitos on the big screen, creating one in real life is simply not possible.

The continuation of the movie brought scenes that were unfortunately cluttered with an all-too-predictable plot, which is repeated in so many mainstream Hollywood movies. That is, the 3D experience stopped at the visual element of the film. Instead of choosing a complex theme of blurring the line between what is good and bad, the people involved in making the movie decided to focus on a story between nature vs. the corporate world and its evil military muscle. It is again the linear thought of the creators of this film that forget that they benefit from the military might that they portray as evil. They enjoy the freedom of speech because they live under the umbrella of the most powerful nation and its military. They also enjoy the unlimited profits from capitalism that they represent in the film as the evil mining company who brings precious ore from the land of Pandora back home to its needy consumer base. I ask the producers to glance into a mirror and see that they are a part of what they depict as bad and wrong. They need to take some of the responsibility as well and stop depicting the military leaders as the happy arms of Satan. In contrast, a movie called Princess Mononoke put a human and caring face to the mining effort that was also destroying nature in its quest to expand. Perhaps the producer thought the mainstream American audience is too simple-minded to grasp a more involved plot?

For me, the most atrocious offense were the parents who brought small children to watch this film. How do we enlighten parents who decide to take kids to this show? As I was constantly negotiating with my emotions to keep everything in check under such powerful scenes and sounds, I could only wonder how still-developing minds of young children were being assaulted by trying to do the same, only to end up failing and crying. Certainly the corporate structure that the producers were attacking with the plot of this film are essentially guilty of the same gluttonous greed by not penalizing theaters for allowing children under 13 to view this movie. (The movie is rated PG-13, which I agree with).

Despite the overkill of missiles, battles and destruction, Avatar 3D brought awareness to the masses to realize that destroying the habitat, either alien or domestic, is a really bad thing. I only hope that the younger generation that is getting a full dose of this message from so many sources aren’t overly desensitized to forget that they should actually do something about it.

The missing link from reformed health care

economy, evolution, political

There’s been a lot of talk about what the right health care for this country should look like. But in all the things that I’ve read and heard, I’m not yet convinced that any of the options, present or proposed, would really make any difference for our population.

The need to encourage awareness of people’s own choices, and to understand the need for reform at the governmental level is grossly omitted from the picture. The decision making by the FDA to approve certain items that can be taken into the body needs a major overhaul. There is no health plan that won’t eventually bankrupt the wallets of hard-working people as long as the cheaper (more economical) grocery store choices can be major factors of obesity. And that only scratches the surface of other ills resulting from many rulings of the FDA, like: unknown genetically-modified food effects, aggressive marketing to children for food full of food coloring, toxic preservatives in vaccinations, etc. Over the long term these choices can get people into a culture of medications and the subsequent taking of other medications to counter side effects. This is living proof that we are, at our essence, an unhealthy nation.

Government’s role in the healthy guidance of proper diet is nowhere in the legislation of health care reform. Given the current state of national debt, we need to re-adopt the adage of “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This way we could spend less “ounces” of federal dollars trying to solve such a behemoth issue in this country.

Before we can start on the path to a new national balanced diet, we must first work on the individual balanced lifestyle. We need to move away from the daily extremes that carry us away and find more sustainable choices. Some can go the path of making better external choices to affect the inner workings of the mind, and others can bring consciousness to the mind to then start making better choices. Either way, the current road of unhealthy choices needs an off ramp to start seeing a country’s landscape full of people who understand that being American means we’re intelligent, flexible and can be role models for each other and the world at large.

Giving Peace Prizes

acknowledgements, evolution, political

“Wasn’t there someone better to get this prize.” This was my first thought in response to hearing the news. It’s not at all that I don’t like Barack Obama. I think he’s the best choice for the job he has. That job also has an attached detail of being the commander in chief for the most powerful armed forces in the world. Peace prize and ‘one who authorizes missile launches’ didn’t seem to go together. That’s what bugged me.

I then though of the implications of award, and how it added pressure on him to rise to it. It’s not easy being a world-class leader in such a troubled world. Powerful countries are motivated by conquering divisions of resources, products and labor for economic survival. But in the spirit of hope, I was encouraged that he, Barack Obama, could actually start turning the tide toward a better common reality.

It’s a lofty goal, but it’s important to start down the path to a better existence for all life here on lovely Earth. I’m impressed by those bold enough to risk their reputation to give Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. Let’s all hope it was a risk worth taking.

Hierarchy of the human experience

evolution

It’s been interesting to see the very slow tally of votes on the question of the importance of spirit vs. intelligence vs. knowledge. Many years ago I read some text from a Hindu source that expanded on this issue directly. In my usual method of things that intrigue my senses, I took the concept of these words within and explored them by applying the ideas to my own life. I found the words to be true, at least in the sense of how I see things work.

Though love is the ultimate goal of being in the world, there are many other aspects that have to be dealt with on a daily basis. Starting with knowledge, it is found that it is very hard to get things done, or to survive for that matter, without knowing how to do things. As we learn from our parental influences, we achieve the basics in life that we further in the ways that allow us to attain things that are interesting for us. Continuing on in knowledge, we learn a trade or skill that allows us (hopefully) to earn a living. These things are attained through a school of some sort… be it a formal education, guidance of a master, or learning on the streets of life. Either way, knowledge is the base of the experiences through one’s life to learn how to be in the world. In many ways, the world looks upon knowledge as the pinnacle of being, as reflected by the importance we give those who have dedicated their lives in such endeavors and achieving doctoral degrees. We have learned that we should only listen to those who have a surplus of knowledge in certain fields of study. These are the experts that flood the news and information channels everyday. But is knowledge the ‘end all, be all’ of the human experience? I think not.

Knowledge has a a limiting factor. Without intelligence, knowledge hits a dead end. Using intelligence we can filter through the facts of others’ knowledge to see what applies to our particular learning. We can also use intelligence to see outside the current mode of knowledge. Take for instance the old-world thought that the earth was flat, and the collective thought that heavenly bodies revolved around the earth. In their day, these were the dominating elements of knowledge, but for some it just didn’t explain the whole picture well enough. Intelligent persons surfaced with new facts and evidence, many against persecution, to enlighten the population of these new ideas. This is a prime example of intelligence. Intelligence is the constantly evolving notion that moves us as a collective force into more advanced (and hopefully more enlightened) ways of seeing and understanding the world.

But what is knowledge and intelligence without spirit? Indeed, what is life itself without the motivating force that animates our bodies and minds, creating a base from which sprouts the other two? I myself can see how spirit charges my mind and intelligence to attain certain kinds of knowledge. It is the alignment of my spirit with certain qualities that are important to me and motivates me to learn about some things, and to totally ignore others. Most of us don’t think about what forces drives us, but only that we are driven to learn about some topics. This force is spirit, and a poor alignment of the spirit can bring about harmful and dangerous results. A person armed with knowledge and intelligence, but with no concern for spirit, can do quite a bit of damage in society as shown by selfishly idealistic dictators and criminals of all sorts. Before I listen to the thoughts of any one person, I always have to assess where the person is in regards to her/his spirit. If that person cannot reveal that, then I cannot commit my devotion to his or her passion. It is therefore the most important factor of the three.

Aligning the spirit brings discernment to chase the proper goals. Intelligence allows us to find the best methods to attain the desired goals. Knowledge is the active force that gives us the retention of learned items to be able to apply them to our daily world. Though all three are inherently intertwined in our human existence, it is important to know where one should start.

March 23, 2009

Eugene, OR

Last night I had a dream. In it I frantically searched for water as my tank fish were somewhere in the swampy carpet of someone’s living room. I couldn’t find the de-chlorinator, no matter where I searched. I kept looking at the carpet, wondering if my fish were all right. But somehow I couldn’t see the fish in the shaggy soggy carpet. Crabs began to crawl about, which I thought was rather curious.

I woke from my dream and thought of my dream. How odd it was! It was only two days ago that I removed Sprinkles, the smaller pearl gourami, from the work tank. Goldie, the larger gold gourami, wounded Sprinkles after days of relentless rage. The two had to be separated before things became fatal. In the home tank Sprinkles seemed to be relieved that the fish were all smaller. This morning he appeared to recover well from his dilemma.

A little later as I walked into work, I noticed something was different.  As I approached the tanks, I suddenly stopped and gasped! There, on the floor, not far from the watery home, was Goldie. It was hard to tell how long he lay there, perhaps very recent or from the night before. His piscine body lay there lifeless and stiff. I found a makeshift glove and gently picked up the corpse. (I mean, I can’t just pick it up with my fingers… yuck.) I took him outside and found a nice place for a burial. After a few deep thoughts of Goldie’s life in the tank, I returned inside.

In the tank was Pancake, the large, long-finned, classic silver-black angel. He didn’t greet me like he always does. He stayed in the back of the tank, withdrawn and staring at the back wall. I almost thought for a moment that I sensed a bit of wrongdoing from him. I couldn’t distinguish the look on his face to gauge, whether he actually chased Goldie out, or if I projected guilt upon him. I easily remembered when the same fish murdered my gorgeous veil-tailed angel, Chocolate, two years prior. Either way, I think he knew I was pissed.

A few moments later I stopped and reflected on the soggy and shaggy carpet in my dream. I somehow must have felt the unconscious energy of my doomed Goldie while flapping helplessly on the floor. And perhaps before his last fruitless gulp for water, he thought of his feeder while I dreamt and felt his panicked energy. Or maybe he looked back at Pancake, and with the last bit of strength, stuck up his middle fin.

2012 – Coming soon to a universe near you

environment, evolution, political

The year 2012 and the month of December is approaching. It seems far off, but with the acceleration of time these days it’s going to be here before we realize. For those who still don’t know what 2012 is all about, here is a brief synopsis, and a link to the wiki article…

Supposedly the ancient Mayans in charge of creating a extremely accurate calendar did a wonderful job, but they stopped at a point which translates to mid-December of 2012 in the Julian-Gregorian calendar that we all use in the West. The reason for the end of the calendar is that there was no point going beyond this date, according to the Mayans. Some have translated this to mean that the earth is going to end, time recycles back to its starting point, or that humanity (and everything else) is going to start into a brand new era of being. That’s where the speculation begins to get interesting. There are books galore that can tell you all about what the relevance of 2012 is, but should you believe any of these writings?

Recently I visited the planetarium and spoke with the director of the facility. She is a professional astronomer in Eugene, Oregon. We had a chat about the stars, planets and such, and I asked her if the stars change position over the thousands of years of humans watching them. She informed me that besides a few small deviations, the stars are where they were from our perspective as long as humans have scurried on planet earth. I then asked her about any astronomical evidence that would support the Mayan calendar from a universal point of view. I thought that if we were approaching a starting point as referenced from our position in the galaxy or larger sphere, it might give some credence to what is being tossed around as a life-changing event for all of us. After considerable thought, reflecting and calculating, she could offer no correlation to an astronomical event. I thanked her for her time and knowledge.

So, that is one scientific opinion that would scrap any notion that December 2012 is going to produce anything more than the puff of smoke that came with the Y2K bug that was supposed to bring civilization to its knees.

But if I could offer a couple of examples that would point to a significant event, it would be these two:

  • Time is moving faster and faster. I can easily remember a time when I was bored and watched the clock, but those lazy days are far gone. Now I have trouble doing the relatively same tasks in a day, as I always run out of time. I could expand on this and say that if we were a grain of sand in an hourglass of time, we wouldn’t notice the passage of time if we were near the top of the heap. But once we get closer to the bottleneck, things start to really accelerate by our perspective and become more rapid as we get closer to that point. Now, I could blame all the technology that ’steals’ our time by giving us more and more information to assimilate, but that wouldn’t be as interesting…
  • We are becoming more aware. OK, not all of us. Watching ‘Family Guy’ or reality programming doesn’t seem to do much for the evolution of the mind, but I have noticed that people are becoming more aware of what is going on around them. The fact that we now have a president that is full of promise to make our lives better and more in balance with the earth is also proof that the majority of people are ready to move into a new era of being on this planet. Time tells if we can actually make it in time before things get too bad too quickly.

In conclusion, 2012 can be a major event where everything is different. Maybe we all get to read each others’ thoughts, or maybe Jupiter collapses into a star and we have perpetual daylight. Ya, a lot could happen that would get us all driving solar-hybrid-garbage processing Toyotas, but I am just going to live well, love lots, and wait and see.

Links: Wikipedia (scroll down to “2012 geophysical and cosmological speculations”) or Nay-sayer or the Mayan-Hindu connection. Take your pick!

A Walk through the Wilderness

evolution

Walking through the city to get some things. A man begs for drinking money
and disturbs the people just trying to pass. Only a fool would give him
the change he needs to keep from the responsibilities of life. He is the
mirror of my angry child who wants to rebel.

On the street train a man sits across from me, wine in a box, drinking it
readily. The train stops in a long and uncomfortable pause, and as
everyone hopes he won’t interact in his demented state, he starts
whispering to the spirits that accompany him. He is the mirror of my mind
that has lost control.

I walk from my stop towards my small and simple home. A man is slumped in
a corner of the street, fully intoxicated. After I pass, he sees a ghost
not so far from him and starts screaming in frustrated bewilderment. He is
the mirror of my haunting past.

As I walk, my mind regresses, and for a moment I am the begging man. I am
the man whispering at ghosts. I am the man running from my shadows once
again. And in the next moment I am back in my present. Somehow I have been
lifted from my turmoil. Today, I walk straight and clean in my overcoat and
briefcase. But one day, not so long ago, I was who they are now. And as
long as they remain, I am always reminded to not forget my past and to
not forget their pain.

Who will be their angels? Who will love the unlovable? How do the lost
find their souls? Will they ever stop again to enjoy the beauty of a
flower, the smell of dew on a fresh spring morning? What does death hold
for them? Hopefully peace will find them before death does.

And so I move forward in my life. A special awareness fills my spirit
everyday. Too much awareness can bring heaviness of the heart. For to even
think of all the pain felt in the world in one brief moment is more than I
can bear. But even when I was lost and alone, cold and wet on the streets
of Rome, there were two presences with me. And as soon as I turned my
perspective in the right direction, a force of energy was there to lift me
up. Though I shared the streets with the homeless and destitute, there was
still a glimmer of hope waiting for me to believe again. And when I
finally turned away from my depression, hope was there to deliver me.

With so many dark mirrors constantly surrounding us in the streets, we
must remember the one thing that cannot break the spirit of our
soul. Belief in something more, something greater, and something we cannot
feel with our senses but can only feel in our hearts. This is our
deliverance and our hope.

I cannot stop their pain alone, but in the simple act of caring for those
who cannot care for themselves, somehow I can imagine the Greater Good
that blesses me today and hopefully can break through their clouded souls
to help them see the Light.

Relinquishing negativity

evolution

”Be careful what you feed your mind, for it might create what it has eaten.”

After talking to some family members, I am reminded that we have much to do to bring about peace in our time. Many of us wait for peaceful things to be in front of our eyes, and even after questioning positive events with cynicism, many of us find it hard to see the world in a new light of love and harmony. It doesn’t surprise me. There are so many channels of information that inundate our minds with negative thoughts that it is hard to get ‘out of the loop’. Television is probably the easiest place to find negativity, but that is followed up by music that glorifies it, and now the Internet has become a new channel for overwhelming us with less-than-pleasant images.

It is easy to see hell on earth. News is full of bad news, and this perpetuates the madness. And since we humans tend to imitate what is presented to us, we are in grave danger of creating a world where Armegeddon might actually be manifested through our collective lack of faith in humanity and the beauty we can really create. Some call it self-fulfilling prophecy, and it is our greatest danger.

Thankfully, each individual has the power to quickly reverse this downward spiral. Each individual can turn off the television, go outside and see something beautiful. Every person has the ability to give 3 seconds of time to allow one car to merge in front of us in the course of our busy days. And each person can learn how to choose not to react to conflict.

After spending years of my life trying to eliminate negative thoughts from my mind, I finally feel like I have found a level of peace that seems to emanate to my immediate surroundings and my community at large. It wasn’t always this way with me. I remember a time, not too long ago, that I had feelings and thoughts swimming through my head of ‘The End Times’, a draconian new world order, and so many other ‘boogie man’ scenarios that I was really living my daily life in a culture of fear. My decisions followed and I soon ralized that I was living well below my personal potential. Then I learned something really important: hate begets hate, fear begets fear, and yes, love begets love. I was convinced that in order to change how I see the world, I had to rid myself of the undertone of negativity that was so present in my mind.

It wasn’t an easy path. For me, it started with turning off the television, which for the most part has become a channel of fear, murder shows, poor role models (The Simpsons, e.g.), conflict and a perpetual cynical message that used to hit me in my two main input sensors: vision and hearing. I remember at night, I would lay in bed and hear the echoes of all the thoughts were presented to me duriong the day. I remember that I used to be afraid of getting out of bed to even go to the bathroom, in fear of something or someone grabbing me. I finally realized that this was no way to spend the rest of my life. It convinced me that I needed to purge these thoughts away. And so I started on a new path.

I took the extreme route at first and just eliminated my television and radio talk show time altogether. I went through a heavy withdraw, but I was able to keep my ‘fix’ through the new Internet news websites. At least with this, I was able to scale back the sound and visual animation part of the negative input which was a huge part of my problem. The results of my new behavior started bearing fruit in very little time.

I began to notice that my perception of being a victim was starting to fade. I drew a correlation between the two and was excited to see some improvement. The next thing I started realizing was my driving habits. I started letting people in front of me at intersections. I realized that a few seconds of patience and compassion for my other fellow drivers was worth it, since I was doing something positive to people I didn’t even know. Before I realized, I started seeing other random acts of kindness from other strangers. It’s the same dynamic of purchasing a new red car. Suddenly, it seems like everyone else went out and did the same thing. Red cars just started coming into perception. Without realizing it, living in negativity does the same thing. It makes us see things that are also negative. The positive things aren’t even ‘on the radar’, even though they happen in front of us, too.

Today, I can testify to the fact that purging my mind of almost all negative thoughts, especially the mundane and unimportant ones, opened my eyes and my mind to a much more beautiful world. And I believe that until we reach a level of critical mass of positive thought, we are always going to be plaqued with always trying to rid negative things fro our culture. When we start within by removing the smaller elements of negativity, we can then make some real strides in taking care of the bigger picture.
